Crabs with Padang Sauce - Kepiting Saos Padang

Yesterday I made Crabs with Padang Sauce - a spicy dish from Indonesia and it tastes similar to the Singaporean chili crabs. I am not sure if this dish really comes from Padang, a city in Indonesia, or if it's just a name to indicate that this dish is very spicy, since Padang's cuisine is often characterised as being very hot and spicy.

I don't eat crabs very often, and if I do, I normally do so in restaurants. I was nevertheless tickled to make a crab dish when I saw a packet of frozen crab pieces in an Asian supermarket a few days ago. This dish is really very easy to make, providing that you don't need to kill or cut the crabs yourself....:) Here is the recipe.

I didn't use red onion and onion, because I didn't have them.

Ingredients
  • 1 kg crab pieces
  • 3 tbs minced garlic
  • 2 tbs minced red onion
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 tbs sliced chillies (or more)
  • 1 tbs minced ginger

  • 2 tbs fish sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tbs tomato sauce
  • 4 tbs chilli sauce
  • Green onions, sliced
